The Seminoles Are The New BCS Champions!

Last night the Florida State Seminoles and the Auburn Tigers met at what was, fortunately or unfortunately - whichever way you look at it, the last BCS Championship, and what a great game to draw the BCS system to a close!  Florida State entered the game undefeated, having played some of the toughest teams in all of college football.   The Auburn Tigers were coming in on a high note too, having defeated that Crimson Tide of Alabama in the last game of the regular football season, then defeated the University of Missouri (another bunch of Tigers) rather soundly to win the SEC championship game.

I had anticipated the BCS Championship game very highly when I learned which teams would play.  The Florida State Seminoles are one of my "adopted" teams from years back.  I have not accorded similar status to the Tigers, but when they play, they are usually the team I root for, or, for you language fanatics, for WHOM I root.  With the Seminoles and the Tigers playing for the BCS Championship, it was a win-win situation for me.  The Seminoles have played well all year, worked hard in practice, and deserved to be where they were.  Auburn was somewhat of a surprise this year, however.  Last year, the Tigers won but three games, all of those against teams that could not and did not test the Tigers at all.  This year, however, the Tigers surprised a lot of people by winning all but one of their regular football games.  My beloved LSU Tigers were the only team to defeat Auburn in the regular season.  Since the game was played in "Death Valley" in Baton Rouge, odds were greatly against Auburn.  But save that one loss, this has truly been a dream season for Auburn and for their head coach, Gus Malzahn.

The Championship game, at least the first half, was a surprise.  The game, expected to be a "shoot out," was in fact ALL Auburn right up to half-time.  I was one of the surprised because I expected these teams to match each other score for score right up to the final whistle.  At half time, the Tigers went into the locker room with an eleven point lead.  The game was not over by any means, but the Auburn would start the third quarter with a substantial lead.  But the momentum had been with the Seminoles at the end of the first half, which should have served notice to the Tigers that there was still a wide open game ahead.  And the Seminoles had Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston in their arsenal.  He had not done much in the first half, but as has been the case so many times in college football, the second half was a "new game."

The Seminoles came back in the third quarter ready to play football.  While they only scored three points, it was apparent that they had settled down and were getting back in the game.  The Tigers went scoreless through the entire third quarter.  Then, in the forth quarter, the Seminoles came alive, scoring twenty one more points while the Tigers were only able to add ten to their earlier scores.  In the end, if one had not watched the game or seen any of the statistics, it might have appeared that the game had indeed been a shoot out.  But such was not the case as the Seminoles outscored the Tigers by eleven points in the fourth quarter.  The final quarter was all Seminoles!

I would like to congratulate the Seminoles for winning the national championship, and I would also like to congratulate Auburn for the awesome season they had as well.  The Tigers turned around in just one year under the direction of Coach Malzahn,  and I hope the team will not let the narrow loss of the BCS Championship Bowl define their entire season, which as I said, was a Dream Season not to be forgotten for some time to come.

As for me, I am eagerly awaiting next football season.  Guns Up, Tech!!!  Geaux Tigers!!
